In the northwest of Washington, Gaithersburg is a suburb and primary city. It was incorporated as a town in 1878 and then became its own independent city twenty years later!

Gaithersburg is located east and west of Interstate 270. The historic area in the eastern section retains a strong sense of nostalgia from its early 20th century origins, which can be felt when walking through “Olde Towne”. This part also includes Lakeforest Mall, City Hall, and Bohrer Park (a well-known joint community recreation center) that offers outdoor water fun for kids during the summer months.

West side of the city has many wealthier neighborhoods that are designed with smart growth techniques and embrace New Urbanism. Award-winning Kentlands community, Lakelands community, Washingtonian Center (better known as Rio), popular shopping/business district where consumers come for deals during Black Friday or other holidays like Christmas to buy items from huge brand name stores like Target and Dick’s Sporting Goods along with smaller shops such as Francesca’s or Blue Mercury.

Two New Urbanism communities are under construction, including Watkins Mill Town Center (Casey East and West), and the massive “Science City”. The state has a bus rapid transit line planned for Gaithersburg’s western portion that starts at Shady Grove Metro Station. It will connect all of high density neighborhoods in eight stops throughout city boundaries.

Gaithersburg is a wonderful city. Home to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), it’s an exciting place with lots going on! There are also major employers in town, like IBM, Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services business area headquarters, AstraZeneca ,and Sodexo.
